As summer began, interns participating in Aspire of WNY’s Work Readiness Class started off on the right foot with a new setting at our new WCA (We Connect All) building in Fredonia. This updated space gave them room to move more freely, collaborate openly with their peers, and step outside their comfort zone to experience new things. Now that they have moved to a larger space with comfortable seating and a quiet atmosphere, staff have noticed that this energy has sparked a remarkable difference in how the interns choose to participate in the class.
As one instructor explained, “The new space gives interns greater opportunities for active participation, and having access to a kitchen area allows us to build real world learning experiences into the lessons.” The shift in environment has encouraged them to settle in, take initiative during class time, and approach each session with a renewed sense of focus.
Accepting feedback and adopting a mindset of growth was the primary focus for June’s session. These concepts came to life through group discussion and hands-on activities. Reflective openness and the courage to try were clear to see, especially as interns listened and applied the lessons in real time. Conversations centered around constructive feedback, identifying what it looks like in the workplace, and why it matters. Everyone took note of feedback’s positive effect on communication, overall performance, and personal strengths. They offered each other support, recognized areas they hoped to improve, and used feedback as a necessary tool to accomplish goals. These discussions helped interns understand how feedback can guide decision-making and strengthen teamwork.
Vision boards were a stand-out activity of June’s session. Using meaningful images, symbols, and words, the interns created a visual representation of personal and professional achievements to help actualize their dreams. A major moment came when interns used a SMART TV to share their boards with the group; seeing their work displayed on a large screen created a better appreciation for one another’s ideas. Staff noted that “with effort, perseverance, and a positive attitude, interns can work toward achieving their goals,” reinforcing the connection between vision, motivation, and growth. Each board showed unique pieces of their personality, allowed them to gain perspective on the importance of motivation, and gave them the chance to create something all their own.
The progress shown by the individuals in June’s Work Readiness session proves just how effective and empowering the right environment can be. It sets a foundation for forward momentum and inspires new meaning behind personalized support, highlighting how thoughtful structure shapes each person’s experience. The space fills with small moments of creativity, continued learning, and community and becomes a setting built for success.
