Beyond the Program: The Lasting Impact of Day Services

Our Day Services programs at Aspire of WNY assist people in discovering their interests, developing new skills, and maintaining relationships with their local communities. Every experience is customized to each person’s particular needs and interests, from volunteering and pursuing personal objectives to acquiring everyday living skills and engaging in leisure activities. It provides meaningful daytime opportunities that promote personal growth, independence, learning, socialization, and recreation.

Participants can choose between site-based and community-based programs, allowing them to build on their strengths while pursuing their own goals and interests. Site-based programs offer structured activities in a supportive environment, including daily living skill development, technology education, artistic expression, wellness activities and social opportunities. While Community-based programs extend those opportunities out into the world, helping individuals build independence through volunteer experiences, community outings, skill development, and meaningful connections throughout Western New York. Both programs engage in BeleafAbilities, a unique program that incorporates horticulture, gardening, and plant education into everyday learning.

During a recent visit to Aspire of WNY’s Audubon site, Vice President of Day Services Laura Beth Malkowski shared that the impact of these programs goes far beyond the activities themselves. Day Services is not simply a place to spend the day, it’s a source of support, advocacy, and lasting relationships. Staff members work alongside individuals every day, getting to know them so well that they are often the first to recognize changes that may indicate a medical concern or a need for additional support. They also help individuals navigate major life transitions, working closely with care coordinators, families, and other providers to ensure continuity of care, stability, and safety. Laura Beth shared examples of how Day Services team members have supported individuals through significant life changes, such as the loss of housing. In this situation, staff worked closely with care coordinators and other service providers to secure safe alternative support, ensuring continuity of care, stability, and the individual’s overall well-being.

The visit also highlighted the people who bring these programs to life. Staff warmly welcomed participants and celebrated them while creating opportunities for learning, friendship, and independence. Individuals including Peggie Couture, Alexandra Burden, Michael Baumler, and Aurora Erb shared moments from their day allowing for their pictures to be taken, demonstrating the confidence, connections, and sense of community that Day Services helps foster.

At its core, “Day Services is not just about quality services but also about supporting the whole person.” -Laura Beth Malkowski
