FROM ASPIRE OF WNY’S LEADERSHIP TEAM:
The recent public dialogue surrounding autism and its causes has brought a renewed focus to a topic central to our agency’s mission. Aspire of WNY has always been committed to providing compassionate, person-centered support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and that includes people on the autism spectrum.
We believe that the most meaningful progress is made when we focus on what truly matters: supporting individuals across all walks of life. Our core belief is that every person, regardless of their diagnosis, deserves the tools, love, and methods to live a whole and independent life on their own terms. This principle is at the heart of everything we do, from our residential programs, to community & independent living supports, to our day habilitation services.
The recent discourse reminds us of a crucial truth: a person with autism is just another person. Each individual’s journey is unique, complex, and deeply personal. Autism is not a one-size-fits-all condition, and the language we and others use to discuss it should reflect this richness and humanity. It’s essential to move beyond broad generalizations and instead, celebrate the unique strengths and perspectives that each person brings to the world, regardless of their ability or what is considered a “disability.”
As an organization, we are and will always be dedicated to supporting research that is thoughtful, inclusive, and grounded in evidence. However, we believe that proper understanding and effective support can only be achieved when we listen to and elevate the voices of individuals we support and their families. Their lived experiences alongside scientific research conducted based on their needs is the most valuable data we can gather.
We are committed to building a world where every individual we support feels seen, heard, empowered, and allowed to live to their fullest potential and actualize their dreams. We will continue to champion services that are tailored to the individual, and we will stand by our belief that the focus should always be on providing the support and resources people need to live independently and successfully in their own, unique way.
