Aspire of WNY’s Center for Learning Students Explore, Learn, and Have a Blast with Enrichment Groups!

This year at the CFL, our students are taking their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) to the next level — and having a ton of fun while doing it! Enrichment groups are giving students new ways to explore, learn, and grow, and the results are inspiring.

In our preschool sensory and feeding group, two Occupational Therapists are helping students dive into new foods and textures. Some brave students have even tried foods they’ve never tasted before — a huge milestone! Others are practicing handling new foods or filling sensory bottles, all while building confidence and comfort with new experiences.

Our older students are joining the excitement too. Guided by an Occupational Therapist and Speech Therapist, they explore textures and foods they may have avoided in the past. Every time a student decides to try something new, it’s a moment worth celebrating!

Communication is also front and center in our AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) group. Students use their AAC devices to participate in games and activities, cheering on friends and learning together. New AAC users have the chance to observe more experienced students, building confidence and skills along the way.

One student even requested a video game group this fall — and we made it happen! With support from an OT and SLP, students are playing Wii and board games, practicing following directions, strengthening executive function skills, and learning to cheer on friends.

In our social skills group, students are using the program A Little Spot to put words to their feelings. They’re learning to identify how they feel, why, and how to express it comfortably — a crucial step in emotional growth.

Our students love these enrichment groups so much that they come to school each week asking, “Which group can I join today?” And honestly, who could blame them? With learning this fun, it’s easy to get excited!
