Just because the school year is coming to close at Aspire of WNY’s Center for Learning (CFL) in Cheektowaga, doesn’t mean the energy for learning is fading… Far from it! Back in June, the CFL hosted a special continued education event called “The Power of Power,” in partnership with Invacare and Adaptive Switch Laboratories.
For two and a half inspiring days, therapists of all kinds—physical, occupational, and speech—from both the CFL and Aspire of WNY’s Article 16 Clinic, joined forces with local tech gurus and vendors. Together, they explored all the recent breakthroughs happening in the world of adaptive technology, even testing out new tools that help individuals break barriers and gain greater independence!
The event was especially meaningful because individuals supported by our agency had the opportunity to join in on the fun, even getting the opportunity to test out some of the cutting-edge technology themselves. From communication devices and electronic feeders to switch-activated toys and even a robotic arm, participants had the chance to experience how different controls, such as head arrays, chin drivers, fiberoptic switches, and eye gaze technologies can enhance independence.
The room came alive with excitement as families and therapists from the CFL cheered students on every step of the way while they tested our various power mobility devices. One standout moment was when one of our students was named an Adaptive Switch Laboratories product ambassador, showcasing her incredible skill with a head array that lets her effortlessly command her wheelchair, Augmentative or Alternative communication device, and electronic feeder!
At Aspire of WNY’s CFL, the end of the school year is just the start of new possibilities—where technology empowers independence, and every day is an opportunity to unlock full potential!
