Finding Your Voice: Inside Aspire of WNY’s Adult Therapy Services

Sometimes, finding your voice isn’t about speaking; it’s about finding the right way to communicate it.

For Zareyfah Harleem, “Zee,” that means using an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device to communicate. Through Speech-Language Services at Aspire of WNY, Zee has become increasingly confident and independent in using her device, giving her the ability to share her experiences, and her story in her own way.

Speech Language Pathologist, Stephanie Nath, knows that communication looks different for everyone. “There is no one-size-fits-all approach to communication, and our job is to find what works best for each person.”

For Stephanie, watching Zee use her AAC device to tell her story has been especially meaningful. “Moments like this remind us that communication is about having the ability to share your identity, your experiences, your opinions, and your story, in the way that works best for you.”

Zee’s journey is a powerful reminder that speech therapy is about more than just working on speech. It’s also that staff support individuals with language, social communication, cognition, voice, swallowing, helping individuals take those skills and participate more fully in everyday life.

For Aspire of WNY’s therapy staff, these moments are what make the work so rewarding. As Stephanie put it, “The individuals we support motivate us every day.”

We’re proud of the dedicated staff who help the individuals we support find their voice, reach their goals, and participate more fully in their daily lives. To learn more about Adult Therapy Services go to https://www.aspirewny.org/services/adult-therapy-services/ or please call: 716-505-5655.
