What do Legos, phone stands, and dragons all have in common? They’re all creations of Tech Today’s new 3D printer! Over at Aspire of WNY’s Technology Today location, individuals are mixing creativity and hands-on learning with the help of a brand-new 3D printer.
The 3-D printer has quickly become a fan-favorite among participants in the Tech Today program, offering endless opportunities for creativity and hands-on learning. Individuals are exploring new ways to express themselves and create useful items, from keychains and bracelets to fidget toys and custom phone stands. The staff guides participants through one-on-one sessions, teaches them the basics, and encourages them to begin planning for even bigger projects.
Regenia Johnson, Technology Associate at Aspire of WNY, explains how the 3-D printer also creates adaptive equipment to support individuals daily. “We’re always going on Tim Hortons runs during the program, so we had the idea to print cup holders that can clip onto power wheelchairs that many of the individuals we support use,” explains Regenia. “This way, participants can create something that will help increase independence while learning to become more comfortable with technology.”
The 3-D printer has also been used to meet sensory and accessibility needs. Staff have helped participants create fidget toys for sensory regulation and custom cell phone stands to assist those with motor challenges. Participants use a program called Maker World Beta, where they can browse and select items to print, giving them the freedom and independence to choose what they want to create.
Beyond its practical uses, the 3-D printer promotes creativity and collaboration. Some individuals are already building impressive 3-D-printed bracelet collections, while others are designing custom Lego pieces. Learning to share printer time and manage project durations also helps participants build teamwork and time management skills, as each individual aims to keep their projects under an hour so that other participants can use the printer.
‘The possibilities with the 3-D printer are endless. We’re all very excited to see how the individuals supported by this program will continue to bring their ideas to life through this amazing technology; it’s been a wonderful addition to the program and something special for them,” says Regenia.
Aspire of WNY is incredibly grateful for the addition of the 3-D printer, which is already opening new doors for creativity, hands-on learning, and increasing independence for the individuals we support. We can’t wait to continue to see all the new creations that are still to come out!
