Preventing Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) with Aspire of WNY’s Medical Quality Partnership

The Quality Partnership Medical Committee is focused on all factors that impact the health and well-being of those supported and employed by Aspire of WNY. As part of our ongoing effort to share initiatives to keep people healthy and safe, we are sharing information related to:
PREVENTING URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS (UTIs)
UTIs occur when bacteria enter the urinary tract. The people we support are at higher risk for UTIs for many reasons. However, there is much that we can do to prevent UTIs for those supported at Aspire of WNY, including:
  • Keeping folks well-hydrated
    • Offer drinks regularly and between meals, especially for those who need support from staff to drink.
    • Encourage individuals to drink 8-10 glasses of fluid daily** and offer foods high in fluid (e.g., watermelon, strawberries, broccoli) [** unless there are fluid restrictions for the person]
  • Providing prompts and support, as needed, to ensure that those we support are:
    • using the bathroom regularly or having their briefs changed frequently & promptly
    • Bathing/showering regularly
    • Wiping from front to back after going to the bathroom
On behalf of the Quality Partnership – Medical, thank you again for all you do to keep those supported by Aspire of WNY safe and healthy!
