Behavior Intervention Specialist

Minimum Qualifications:

BCBA and a Master’s Degree is behavior analysis or a field closely related to clinical or community psychology and a minimum of three (3) years providing services to individuals with developmental disabilities OR

Master’s degree in a clinical or treatment field of psychology, social work, school psychology, applied psychology, a related human service field or NYS license in mental health counseling AND OPWDD-approved specialized training or experience in functional assessment techniques and behavior support plan development.  A minimum of two (2) years providing services to individuals with developmental disabilities OR

Bachelor’s degree in a human service field and have provided behavioral services for an OPWDD agency as of, and continuously, since December 31, 2013, and are either actively pursuing a Master’s degree in an applied area of psychology, social work, or special education, or will complete at least one graduate-level course in an applied health service area of applied psychology, social work, or special education each year.

Ability to read, write the English language at a level that allows for understanding of assessments, service plans, and progress notes. Ability to train staff in the implementation of behavior plans and behavior documentation methods.  Ability to provide written information to individual support teams.  Ability to evaluate progress and make revisions to behavior support plans when necessary.  Ability to perform all of the essential job functions for a minimum of a seven and one half (7.5) hour shift, with one hour unpaid meal break.

Primary Responsibility:

The Behavior Intervention Specialist provides behavior support services for the Agency to ensure that individuals served have the opportunities to make choices, develop, and achieve their goals, participate in the community, maintain good health and secure personal future, be treated with respect and dignity and experience relationships with family members, friends and neighbors as specified in the Agency’s Mission Statement.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Critical and crucial to the position’s essential function is the safety of the people of Aspire serves. Due to the nature of the individuals we serve, the essential functions require all the duties and responsibilities listed below to be performed in all environments and using all appropriate equipment.  All individuals are required to be able to perform these movements without significant risk of injury.

Essential Physical Functions are the ability to:

  1. Bend, stoop, squat, kneel, sit and lift as per program needs.
  2. Provide and facilitate two-way communications with others.
  3. Transfer, move, reposition, shift, and place people in pieces of equipment necessary for their physical circumstance ensuring their safety, comfort, and their natural living conditions as per program needs.
  4. Physical agility/ability to react to a life-threatening emergency or to intervene in a crisis situation including using your body as an intervention (SCIP-R or other techniques), as prescribed, to assure safety of the individuals. Physical agility/ability includes but is not limited to bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, sitting, standing and lifting as per program needs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assess abilities, coping capabilities, and adaptive skills of individuals served. Under supervision, develop plan of service to enhance inclusion by improving behavior.  Participate in individual support team meetings as needed and communicate with the team and the psychologist, psychiatrist, and Behavior Support Coordinators.
  2. Under the supervision of the consulting psychologist, perform behavioral assessments, including behavior support services initial assessments, and writes report to be shared with individual support team.
  3. Provide consultation, as needed, on habilitation plans and program implementation through meetings.
  4. Develops goals for individuals who have behavior support plans.
  5. Develop, plan, and conduct in-service training to staff on individual behavior support plans and related documentation.
  6. Develop and conduct training for individuals, utilizing curriculum as needed.
  7. Develops data collection and measurement system mechanisms for monitoring and reporting progress on each behavior management case and for follow-up on each terminated behavior management case.
  8. Under supervision, develop medication monitoring plans and supporting documentation.
  9. Attends pertinent meetings, self-schedules and attends consumer support team planning meetings for individuals who require behavior management services and supervisory meetings and psychiatric appointments.
  10. Remains current on behavior support/ mental health / developmental disability literature and attends professional field-related workshops/conferences as mutually agreed upon. Presents information to staff in form of oral or written report, as requested.
  11. Remain current with New York State regulatory guidelines for restrictive physical interventions, behavior management.
  12. Maintains files in organized, working manner. Complete monthly notes describing progress of individuals on specified caseload.
  13. Join Behavior Support Coordinators in presenting proposed restrictive or intrusive behavioral interventions to Behavior Rights Committee. Participate in other Agency committees as mutually agreed upon.
  14. Participates in maintaining a safe work environment.
  15. Adheres to Agency’s policies, procedures, rules and regulations. As a condition of employment adherence to attendance and lateness standards are required.
  16. Remains current with the Aspire organizational structure and the support services available to persons with developmental disabilities in the local area.
