Turning Disabilities into Capabilities
Twin Wheels
A case study in Healthcare
Twin brothers Ryan and Nicholas Stahrr were born with cerebral palsy. They attended Kids’ Korner in Williamsville, one of Aspire’s integrated preschool programs.
At age 3, the Stahrr twins had a very limited ability to walk independently. In addition, they lacked the ability to operate a manual wheelchair. The clinic ran a trial demonstration that concluded the twins had the necessary skills to operate a power wheelchair.
When the health team ordered power wheelchairs for both of them through Medicaid, the Department of Health denied both requests. The Stahrr’s then asked for a hearing to appeal the decision. Physical therapist John Bush did an outstanding job presenting the cases for the power wheelchairs. Both denials were overturned and the boys now have their power wheelchairs.
"I can’t tell you how exciting it was when Ryan and Nicholas got their chairs," said Cathy Voyer, director of children’s services. "John and I both had tears in our eyes. It’s heartwarming to realize that for the first time in their lives, the twins can move themselves without having someone move them."
The twins participated in Aspire’s MOVE (Mobility Opportunities via Education) program. An activity-based curriculum, MOVE taught the students basic functional motor skills needed for adult life within the home and community.
